Marten

"We stand for those that stand for music"- Premium loudspeakers for the discerning audiophile - from Sweden

MARTEN Oscar Trio speakers

RRP NZ$23,995/pr incl GST

Oscar Trio, launch model for our new series, is a defining moment - the same Marten sound in a new build. Our chief designer Leif Olofsson crafted new technology to achieve the same performance that we’ve built our name on. Innovation drove the creation of the Oscar series; understanding challenge, taking risks and rethinking design are the ashes from which Oscar was born.

Part Time Audio - Editors Choice Award: As far as value, one thing is definite: I only know of a handful of speaker systems anywhere near their price that offers worthy competition. Find a dealer. Arrange for a safe demo. You won’t be sorry. Highly recommended.

  • "I could easily hear the result of this extraordinary tech trickle-down and boundary-pushing in the Marten Oscar Trio"…..Dave McNair | Part-time Audiophile

Oscar Trio meets the demand for a reasonably-priced Marten speaker, without sacrifice to our renowned sound and quality. To achieve this we re-designed the build and created a bespoke driver.

The build offers exceptionally controlled and natural sound; true musicality that is the mark of a Marten speaker.

    Custom designed drivers

    True Marten sound

    2-way

    Competitive price-point

To keep the same Marten sound we designed brand new drivers, allowing more control of the details.

Hard ceramic is light, yet extremely rigid, making it one of the best materials for speaker membranes – it’s also known as Sapphire.

Our ceramic cones have a high internal damping factor, because of a refined electrochemical process. The membrane also has a high material resonance frequency, meaning distortion is minimal; offering a level of clarity that is the holy grail for high end speaker cones.

The exterior is an exercise in minimalist design – no unnecessary details; no embellishment. Marten cabinet design is a balance of strength and elegance: the perfect compliment to the sound.

The optional magnetic cover snaps on with a satisfying click, instantly streamlining the form without changing the sound.

We use Jorma Design internal wiring, for its exemplary quality and performance. Handmade in Sweden, the cables use separate + and – for enhanced shielding and the highest quality Copper.

This offers natural, transparent sound; the perfect choice for our speakers.

Cables are integral components, so they must work harmoniously with our precision design and build. Jorma Design delivers exactly what a Marten speaker demands.

Designed for Marten, the pucks and cones are made from high-tech engineering thermoplastic. This material has incredible stiffness, low friction, excellent dimensional stability and resonance control. The perfect balance of qualities needed for precision parts.

Our pucks and cones offer the isolation necessary for our speakers to perform at the peak of their capabilities.

We prefer to use lower order crossovers, as the higher order crossovers tend to limit the dynamics and details. Our second order crossover has been creatively designed to make the best of the dynamic range.

MARTEN Parker Quintet speakers

RRP NZ$64,995/pr incl GST

"Judging from any aspect, the Parker Quintet is one of the best speakers in its price range. Parker Quintet has allowed me to hear richer and more gorgeous sounds than ever before, with more slender and subtle changes, a thicker and more cohesive body, with relaxed ends extending, and a very clean and refreshing sound. The bel can’t resist. Judging from any aspect, Parker Quintet can be regarded as one of the best speakers at the same price, and it is definitely worth having.”…. Lin Zhiyu | U-Audio, Taiwan

  • With custom designed technology and perfectly balanced build techniques, Parker Quintet is new in every way, but remains faithful to the Marten way of recreating sound as it is in life. With extreme resonance reduction, the cabinet is truly free of the soundstage, letting music and emotion take centre stage.

The cabinet features sleek, tapering sides created from M-board, a multi-layered material offering extreme resonance reduction. Parker Quintet is so resonance-free, it completely disappears within the soundstage. The newly designed cabinet balances visual appeal with low-impact on sound.

Ceramic drivers are custom designed by Leif Olofsson to meet the needs of a loudspeaker in this class. Each unit has a very long linear excursion and utilises the powerful Neodynium magnet system for control. Custom designed components allows a more holistic way of building a system, making Parker Quintet a super-refined Marten speaker.

Designed for the system, four 7.5” bass/midrange ceramic drivers offer a large surface area resulting in a large, precise soundstage and great dynamics. While passive radiators give the control and dynamics needed for Parker Quintet. A speaker of this class demands the ultimate in bass response.

A multi-diverse crossover technique was developed through hours of listening and testing, plus rigorous simulation, calculation and measurement. We’ve really put the work in with this crossover, using the best components and precisely tuning it to work with the system.

MARTEN Mingus Quintet 2 speakers -
RRP NZ$139,995/pr incl GST

Winner of the coveted Stereo Sound Grand Prix 2022

Parallels are often drawn between Swedish and Japanese design. Maybe it’s the pared back aesthetic, with materials fit for purpose. Maybe it’s the pride in craftsmanship that is present in both cultures. Whatever it might be, there is commonality in the design language between Scandinavia and Japan that people often talk about.
Perhaps it is not surprising that we have been recognised for our products once again in Japan. Mingus Quintet 2 has won the coveted Stereo Sound Grand Prix 2022.

  • Our second generation Mingus Quintet 2 has strong foundations of proven design to build on. Using the CELL technology drivers that the Mingus series relies on, it’s full-range, with deep bass and wide dynamics.

Mingus Quintet 2 has five drivers with immaculate control and power, including a pure diamond tweeter, pure ceramic mid-range and aluminium sandwich bass domes. We’ve also geared the first order crossover for a more open, clean and dynamic sound.

Resonance control is greatly improved with an advanced damping mat and solid wood tops and bottoms for a more neutral cabinet. Marten Isolators further reduce resonance by separating the cabinet from the supporting surface.

Pure diamond is the ultimate material for speaker membranes – that’s why we use a Cell diamond tweeter from Accuton. In the high-frequency range, its stiffness-to-weight ratio and internal sound velocity are unsurpassed.

The sonic character of our diamond tweeter is not what you might expect. Our crossover has been carefully designed to bring out the pure and clear sound of this precious stone, softening any harshness.

Diamond is also the best heat conductor known to man, which is essential for loudspeaker membranes, providing the best heatsink for the voice coil – resulting in high power handling and very low compression.

Stiff ceramic is light, yet extremely rigid, making it one of the best materials for speaker membranes – it’s also known as Sapphire.

Our ceramic domes have a high internal damping factor, due to a refined electrochemical process. The membrane has a high material resonance frequency, meaning distortion is minimal. This offers a level of clarity that is perfect for high end speaker domes.

Cell bass driver units have long excursion, extremely low distortion levels and a hidden surround. Made of aluminium sandwich honeycomb, the drivers offer rich, dynamic bass performance with a powerful presentation.

Mingus Quintet 2 is tapered to create less sound reflections and a sleek form. Crafted with the finest materials, it is finished with solid wood tops and bottoms to reduce resonance.

We use specially selected, medium-density fibreboard with optimum rigidity to create high-quality, resonance-free cabinets. The internal structure and bracing keep the cabinet rigid, whilst inside the resonance is further dampened with advanced materials.

Each cabinet is finished with precision veneer and lacquering. The lacquer is carefully built up of 7 layers, each hand-polished in between drying.

We use Jorma internal wiring, for exemplary quality and performance. Handmade in Sweden, the cables use separate + and – for enhanced shielding and the highest quality copper.

This offers natural, transparent sound; the perfect choice for our speakers.

Cables are integral components, so they must work harmoniously with our design and build. Jorma delivers exactly what a Marten speaker needs.

The reduction of resonance is important to the design of our speakers – it can mean the difference between a good speaker and a great speaker. With IsoAcoustics we created Marten Isolators. This precision product allows the cabinet to be completely isolated from the floor, reducing resonance and distortion – leaving the soundstage free.

MARTEN Coltrane Tenor 2 Speakers
RRP NZ$210,00/pr incl GST

“Marten Coltrane Tenor 2 takes everything it has learnt from its big brothers and packs it in to a slimmer form. Its ergonomic cabinets house control and power that you expect from a Coltrane. It's even easier to place in your room, but still delivers true Coltrane sound. Power and control in perfect balance”.Coltrane is about attack, attack, and more attack. Piano's transient attack was among its most notable achievements, without producing a glassy or tinkly sonic aftertaste or shortchanging the instrument's rich harmonic structure. Its other strong suits are clarity, focus, transient snap, resolution of low-level detail, image three-dimensionality, and, especially, transparency.

  • Marten Coltrane Tenor 2 takes everything it has learnt from its big brothers and packs it in to a slimmer form. Its ergonomic cabinets house control and power that you expect from a Coltrane. It’s even easier to place in your room, but still delivers true Coltrane sound.

    WHAT YOU GET

    DIAMOND DOMES
    Sound that sparkles.

Pure Diamond is the ultimate material for speaker membranes. Used in the high-frequency range, its stiffness-to-weight ratio and internal sound velocity are unsurpassed.

Diamond is also the best heat conductor known to man. This is essential for loudspeaker membranes, providing the best heatsink for the voice coil; resulting in high power handling and very low compression.

The sonic character of our Diamond tweeters is not what you might expect. Others can sound ‘overly brilliant’ or ‘hard-as-diamond’. Harmonic distortion can be a problem too. Our crossover has been carefully designed to deal with this. In fact, you get the opposite – the Diamonds simply disappear, leaving only your music.

    CERAMIC DOMES
    Advanced technology for natural sound.

Hard ceramic is light, yet extremely rigid, making it one of the best materials for speaker membranes – it’s also known as Sapphire.

Our ceramic domes have a high internal damping factor, because of a refined electrochemical process. The membrane also has a high material resonance frequency, meaning distortion is minimal; offering a level of clarity that is the holy grail for high end speaker domes.

    BASS DRIVERS
    Low frequencies.
    Low distortion.

The Cell bass driver units have long excursion, extremely low distortion levels and a hidden surround. Made of Aluminium sandwich honeycomb, the drivers offer rich, dynamic bass performance with a powerful presentation.

    CABINETS - Resonance free

Years of research have shown that the best material for loudspeaker cabinets is Carbon Fibre laminate. We’ve tested many materials, but none offer such strength and rigidity. This makes the cabinet extremely inert and resonance-free across the whole frequency range. It also has a high internal damping factor despite its light weight.

We know that cabinet construction is just as important as the components you use inside, so Carbon Fibre is the ideal complement.

    INTERNAL WIRING
    Premium cables for purer sound.

    FEET - Next level isolation.

Dynamic bass with increased power and control
    Natural openness and clarity
    Optimised for cabinet weight
    Resists lateral movement and oscillations
    Reduces internal reflections
    Suitable for carpet

    CROSSOVER
We never follow the path of least resistance.

Marten worked tirelessly to refine the crossover so it would work perfectly with Accuton Cell drivers. It wasn’t an easy task, but it was the clear solution.

The first order crossover makes it possible to have perfect time and phase coherence; and flawless time coincidence. This means that all registers are generated at the exact same moment, as it was recorded. Just like live music.

MIT

Master-Class Audiophile Cables with exclusive "Poles of Articulation" - from the USA. (used in my personal system).

MIT Heritage EVO series high-end audio cables

RRP POA

After completion of the high-end 2C3D project, Bruce decided to miniaturise components inside the new “Heritage Enclosures” This allowed him to create the EVO One, EVO Two and EVO Three models. Bruce regards this project as a ”homage” to the highly regarded 2C3D series.

  • Heritage series cables - to put it simply: Bruce took Oracle and Matrix topologies, used smaller capacitors and inductors of the same values and repackaged them into the 750/330 (Heritage) black boxes.
These products are called the MIT MI-2C3D series. They are now available in three levels; 2C3D Level 1, Level 2 and Level 3.
Similar with the inclusion of three EVO versions,
MIT introduces 6 performance levels as The Heritage Series.

We think you wil love them as much as we do!

MIT Heritage 2C3D series high-end audio cables

RRP POA

2C3D by MIT® (2C3D is an acronym that stands for “Two-Channel, Three-Dimension”) is a technology pioneered by Bruce Brisson, founder of MIT Cables. 2C3DTM technology was engineered to create a believable three-dimensional soundstage from a two channel system.

  • MIT at my house! - Sandman

Earlier this month Mike came by the house with a *big* box of goodies for me to try out in the system - his own set of MIT cables, or more properly interfaces. This included the MI-2C3D Level 1 Speaker interfaces, MI-2C3D Level 1 XLR Interconnects, SL Matrix USB, and Oracle MA-X Digital Balanced Interconnect (AES/EBU). This replaced my Acoustic Zen Hologram 2 speaker cables, Matrix Reference II Interconnects, and WireWorld Platinum AES/EBU and Starlight USB cables.

At first listen, it was clear that there was a big difference with the MIT loom. We listened for a couple of hours and Mike was uncharacteristically quiet, not talking at all during any of the songs we played and hardly saying a word between tracks. As is often the case with major system changes, first impressions are hard to describe - you get a sense of what you hear but you haven't processed it yet.

Fast forward a couple of days - the sound continued to improve as the cables settled in but there was a very slight edge in the highs. I told Mike about it, we did some investigating and found that the interconnects running to the amps were set to medium impedance but the XS 300 amps have high impedance. I made the switch on both interfaces.

Bam! The slight edge was gone. Once settled in at the proper settings the sound was perfect!

    So how do they sound?

First, there's a ton more detail - it's been a while since I've noticed "something I never heard before" on my system but now I get it all the time. And everyone who's heard them says the same thing. Breathing, tapping, fingering, audience noise - much more highly resolved.

Second, the background is quieter - but not in the sense that you see it as "blacker" - blacker would call attention to itself. It's more like there just isn't any background noise anymore, which makes quiet passages stand out more and sudden notes all the more striking.

Finally, it's like the pre-amp suddenly has several new control knobs on it: Texture, Tonal Richness, and Holography... and they're all dialed up to 8 or 9. Those knobs weren't there before, but if they were they would have only been set to 1 or 2 in comparison).

Texture and richness speak for the themselves - they're not squishy terms like "organic" or "musical". Holography... well, if my system was like a High Definition OLED TV before now it's like the Holodeck on the Enterprise (Next Generation). It seems almost that real. And everything is affected equally - male and female vocals, percussion, strings, horns, guitars, and OMG piano!

It's startling at times - the sounds are so real and they come out of nowhere in a sound field that fills the whole space in front of you and doesn't seem to have any relationship with the speakers or equipment in the room. Decay goes on forever. It doesn't sound like reproduced music - just music. And opening your eyes doesn't break the illusion at all.

I could go on but I think you get the idea - these MIT interfaces are not leaving my system (sorry Mike).

MØRCH

MØRCH - Elegant "State of Art" Tonearms of the highest order - from Denmark

MORCH UP4 tonearm

RRP NZ$ POA

The Model UP-4 incorporates a special concept within the uni-pivot principle. The bearing consist of a hardened steel pivot resting in a concave, polished sapphire. The bearing is damped in all directions with silicone fluid. The low positioning of the bearing provides for a greater stability compared to other uni-pivot arms, since a considerable part of the moveable mass of the arm is positioned above the pivot point
With the model UP-4 the azimuth adjustment is made by the way of the counterweights.
As with all Moerch tonearms the UP-4 tonearm has the facility of interchangeable arm wands

MORCH DP6 tonearm

RRP NZ$ POA

The Model DP-6 MK2 has a unique combination of bearings. A silicone-damped, high precision ball-bearing assembly is used for the horizontal plane of motion. Two precision sapphire bearings are incorporated for the vertical mode of motion, which may also be damped, if desired, by injecting silicone fluid into a well for vertical damping. The damping of the horizontal plane of motion is independent of the damping of vertical mode of motion and the latter can further be adjusted to all intermediate levels of damping.
In model DP-6 MK2 the azimuth adjustment for perfect channel separation is accomplished at the pivot of one of the sapphire bearings.
As with all Moerch tonearms the DP-6 MK2 tonearm has the facility of interchangeable arm wands.

MORCH DP8 tonearm

RRP NZ$ POA

A tonearm must be able to move both horizontally and vertically – horizontally as the cartridge moves towards the centre of the record, and vertically to allow for imperfections in the record.
To have excellent audio reproduction at low frequencies, the horizontal movement of the tonearm must be restricted . The “anisotropic” principles different characteristics for different directions of movement – is the essence of the MØRCH DP-8.
The DP-8 has a flywheel shaped central body and two weights on the sides to stabilise the movement of the tonearm horizontally. This means that all the recorded bass, even the very low end of the range, is reproduced with full amplitude and dynamics.

MSB Technology

Acknowledged as some of the most technologically advanced DACs in the world - from the USA

MSB Discrete DAC

from RRP NZ$15,500 incl GST

HiFi Pig Editors Choice Award

With 2 Prime DACs, we yield an unprecedented level of detail, reproducing the musicality, soundstage, and texture of an original performance,

  • The Discrete is a superb bit of kit that I’d really love to take up residence in the system on a permanent basis. What I do know is that the MSB brings an excellent level of performance by way of neutrality to a system that allows other parts of the system to do their thing – it’s sort of the digital equivalent of a very (very) good cartridge.

II cannot do anything but award this DAC our highest award…. HiFi Pig

MSB Premier DAC

from RRP NZ$51,995 incl GST

With 4 Prime DACs, the Premier DAC produces an unmatched level of detail. It reproduces the musicality, soundstage, and texture of the original performance.

  • The Best - MSB Technology’s Discrete DAC was the best DAC I’d heard in my system—until the MSB Premier showed up. The Premier is a super-high-resolution, completely silent, utterly dynamic component that lets music flow through it less hindered than through anything else I’ve heard. In terms of sound quality, it’s the best digital front end I’ve had in my system. Combine that sound quality with flawless build quality, glitch-free operation, and user-selectable modular architecture, and you have not only a winning formula for a great product, you have what in my experience is the best, most complete DAC you can buy.

MSB Reference DAC

from RRP NZ$103,000 incl GST

With 4 Hybrid DACs, the Reference DAC produces an unmatched level of detail. It reproduces the musicality, soundstage, and texture of the original performance, bringing the artist to you.

  • The MSB The Reference DAC isn’t an affordable piece of equipment – its price tag equals a new Mercedes-Benz E 400d 4Matic. Plus, one needs to consider that the MSB devices are built for a brand ecosystem, so it is wise to think about acquiring an MSB power amplifier too. The company does not currently produce any preamps for they see no point in adding another source of noise, and the volume can be comfortable controlled through the DAC, so you may be wanting to buy some MSB extension modules too. That way the total amount of money gets truly stratospheric. For many, there will be an escape route: MSB The Discrete DAC, a device that costs 25% of The Reference, and – supposedly – should deliver the most of its sonic wonder. This logic is obvious but I have to disappoint: The Discrete DAC was available too, and I could compare both devices under completely identical conditions. The Discrete DAC is a stunning DAC, but The Reference leaves it behind. It is not a close shave, the gap between the two is wide. The main difference is the difference of watching a live performance on TV and be at the performance. Maybe it is better not to audition the MSB The Reference DAC, for your audio world will never be the same afterwards. It is a phenomenal DAC.

MSB Select DAC

from RRP NZ215,000 incl GST

With 8 Hybrid DACs, the Select DAC produces an unmatched level of detail. It reproduces the musicality, soundstage, and texture of the original performance, bringing the artist to you.

  • As the MSB Select DAC, the Reference DAS is a vertex of science and art. When it comes to the music such juxtaposition seems too far out, yet as with the Select DAC, the Reference DAC expertly blends them both.

Like the Select DAC the MSB Technology Reference DAC is blurring the line of analog and digital. Digital has come far in past decade and Reference DAC is among the few of the proud examples of the digital audio done right. While some nit-pickers while want to dig out the particularisers the bar was risen so high, that even a non causal and trained connoisseur can immerse in the music without turning on the mind machinery!

There is no doubt, that MSB Technology deserves a special highlighting and for remarkable and stand out performance. For what it represent technically and musically, I’m wholeheartedly already giving out the Mono & Stereo Upper Echelon Product Award!

When listening to a REVO PA-160MR the listener gets an idea of the hidden potential in their music. It is free from the chronic pollution the listener had to endure previously and it is reproduced with a realism that had never been reached before. Power, dynamics, speed, and transparency are matched to an absolute absence of listening fatigue and strong musicality.

These features make it a perfect match with the preamp REVO SC-2, which expresses the same sound personality. But, also for people who want to combine it with other preamps, the REVO PA-160MR can be a perfect partner.

NORMA AUDIO Revo DAC2

RRP NZ$38,995/pr

“The NEW REVO DAC-2 represents one world’s best expression in the realisation of Digital-to-Analog converters. Using the newly developed in house A-DAC.A “universal machine” which is highly sophisticated in all the aspects relevant to sound output. You can finally truly appreciate the actual quality of high resolution files, without the limitations imposed by inadequate implementation.

  • The new REVO DAC-2 represents one world’s best expression in the realization of Digital-to-Analog converters. Using the newly developed in house A-DAC.

In a historical moment when we witness the proliferation of DACs for “computer music”, exclusively designed around the parameters of the so-called technical modernity and cost reduction to the detriment of the potential sound performance of high resolution devices, NORMA proposes a “universal machine” which is highly sophisticated in all the aspects relevant to sound output. You can finally truly appreciate the actual quality of high resolution files, without the limitations imposed by inadequate implementation.

NORMA is pleased to present the new REVO DAC-1 Digital Source. It is an extremely interesting product, both for its outstanding technical content and for its noticeable versatility, obviously combined with the rigor of NORMA musical tradition.

All of this at a very interesting price, considering the technical features.

The NORMA REVO DAC-2 source offers a complete set of digital inputs. As a matter of fact, there are both a full bandwidth USB input (192.0 KHz) as well as 4 SPDIF inputs, coaxial, optical and XLR. Therefore, all the features for an advanced digital source are contained within a single frame, and they are able to meet even the most demanding user’s needs with no limitations, both in terms of versatility as well as of listening quality. The same conversion section and the same output stages that made the REVO CDP1R unique, famous and appreciated, are used in REVO DAC-1 enabling it to reach top world production levels as the quality of sound reproduction.

The NORMA DAC-2 enables the user to manage and store all digital parameters independently for each input. For instance, it is possible to enable the over-sampling feature at any frequency as the user wishes as well as disable it if undesired.

It is also possible to select the Master Clock source between the Low-Jitter local oscillator and the input signal’s one. Finally, it is possible to vary the upsampler parameters, the digital filter’s response, the absolute phase and the volume of the output signal. All of this can be carried out both via the local controls as well as by remote control.

    TECHNICAL FEATURES:

    - Optional board, to be fitted in a spare slot.

    - 5 digital inputs, USB, 2 x SPDIF RCA, SPDIF OPTICAL, AES-EBU.

    - USB input and SPDIF full bandwidth, up to 24 Bit / 192 KHz.

PS Audio Stellar Strata MK2

RRP NZ$3,495

”Just Add Speakers”..
The Stellar™Strata MK2™ an “All-In-One” that combines the benefits of an:
Exceptional analog preamplifier
A state-of-the-art DAC
A 150w Stereo power amplifier
A MC/MM phono stage

  • As an audiophile with a small arsenal of gear, at first I did not pay much attention to PS Audio’s design mantra for the Stellar Strata, ‘Just Add Speakers.’ When I moved into a new house during the review period I had to reassemble and organize a system in a new space quickly. For weeks my system was just the Stellar Strata and speakers. As the Grateful Dead used to sing, ‘the music never stopped.’ And I became sold on the one box solution.

PS Audio Aspen FR10 LoudspeakerS

RRP NZ$ POA

The perfect size loudspeaker for any room.
Hi-Fi News says the aspen FR10 sets the US$10k standard.
The ground-breaking Aspen loudspeakers sets new standards for what is possible in home audio reproduction.

  • PS Audio is definitely on a roll with its aspen loudspeaker series. The new FR10 slots comfortably into the range alongside its bigger brothers, promising a big-hearted, ebullient and hugely enjoyable performance across the board. They do need care and time taken in their setup but, once suitably positioned, they reward handsomely, offering a scale and level of authority that belies their compact dimensions.

REL Acoustics

Premier, audiophile Sub Woofers - from England. (used in my personal system).

REL HT/1510 subwoofer

RRP NZ$4,295

HT/1510 Predator home theatre sub resets expectations it delivers high performance across every category: 1,000-watt amplifier with PerfectFilter™ inputs, new 15” CarbonGlas™ driver that handles vastly more power.

  • Along with its superlative time-domain performance, the HT/1510 also has very good dynamic range performance, as would be expected from a beefy 15” driver mounted in a healthy-sized enclosure and driven by a thousand-watt amplifier. As was said before, that is a recipe for massive bass, and the HT/1510 delivers it. A stack of these things, as we see in REL’s array system, would provide an insane level of output, and that would make me afraid for the structural integrity of my home (but would still be very cool to have).

Aside from the HT/1510’s performance, it has a very respectable level of build quality. Its near 100 lbs. weight comes largely from the solidly built enclosure. While I have dealt with heavier subwoofers in the past, it was still very much a two-person job to pick up and move around. It looks nice too, and the gloss black top adds a touch of luxury that suits the REL brand. The glass fiber cone looks much slicker than most matte cones. The feature set has all the basic controls,.

    1510 2nd harmonic

In the end, I found the HT/1510 to be a very good addition to my audio system that took care of the low frequencies beautifully. At $1.9k, it’s not the cheapest sub out there, but it’s not tremendously expensive either. Given the performance, build quality, and aesthetics, I would say it is very fairly priced. Anyone looking for a solid, well-rounded 15” subwoofer has a great option in the HT/1510. The good news for those who are interested is REL will give buyers a 60-day in-home trial with free shipping both ways for anyone who wants to return it for any reason. That says a lot about the confidence that REL has in making the end-user happy, and after spending time with the HT/1510, I think they are correct in doing so.

REL S 212/SX subwoofer

RRP NZ$9,495

212/SX builds on the strengths of the legendary 212/SE. Upgraded alloy drivers with carbon fiber blades are stronger, a new flat passive radiator extends even deeper and our PerfectFilter™ delivers crushing low bass with greater speed and air.

  • The Bottom Line

In a word, the REL 212/SEs are sublime. Like a linebacker who loves to paint, they have the ability to hit hard when called for, but their more gentle side allows delicate brush strokes that infuse the midrange and upper frequencies with three-dimensional body and sheer presence. The degree to which the 212s improved the already excellent midrange and high frequencies of my system came as the biggest surprise. Their superb bass added a degree of air and space to the sound that, seemingly, only comes with quality reproduction of the low frequencies.

REL S-Carbon Special subwoofer

RRP NZ$7,795

Carbon Special features our 3rd generation carbon fibre 12” driver with a new, bespoke CSP passive driver that delivers 50% longer stroke, powered by our up to 1,000w amp, guided by our CS PerfectFilter™.

  • I was genuinely smitten with results achieved by the REL Carbon Special when partnered with the big B&Ws. If those were the only speaker I used, I would probably have to acquire one. Improving so much on midrange and treble coming from a large floor-standing speaker by using a subwoofer might look like cheating to many. It is not. If you already have a decent system, have some understanding about the harmonic behaviour of the frequency range, and are looking to get more fun out of your music collection, this is probably the least expensive and most comprehensive way to do it.

REL S/510 subwoofer

RRP NZ$4,995

S/510 takes REL’s compact-medium chassis concept to reference-like levels, with style, power and speed. It delivers incredible levels of all ‘round performance. S/510 allows those with less space, or when pairing with high end speakers to have the perfect dance artner

  • REL have made a believer out me for high level connected subwoofers and I wouldn’t have said that a couple of years ago. I think the S/510 are probably designed for rooms like mine – smaller to medium size but with the speed and quality to match very good speakers.

The S/510 are going to cost you a serious chunk money for a pair of them, but they are good enough to support very good speakers likely improving the sound of the system in ways you cannot achieve without them, even with the best DSP and patience of a saint. As opposed to previously being 99% certain, I am now 99.99% certain that subwoofers can benefit all audio systems.

“The Revival Atalante 3s are one of those rare products that this reviewer really does not want to pack-up and return. In fact this is so unappealing that I have decided to buy a pair, my first speaker purchase in over a decade. They are clearly well-engineered, beautifully constructed and offer a value-for-money option for high-quality listening. The Atalante 3s did almost everything my beloved Harbeth M30.1s do, and some things that they can’t, in a package that is half the price. This is what we must call a bargain. Anyone looking for loudspeakers that re-create what the recording engineer intended should put these on their shortlist for a personal audition. I will now be using them as my reference monitors”.

  • “I would sum up the performance of the Atalante 5 as full-bodied, detailed, and dynamic, with a wide and deep soundstage. They sounded good with all types of music and often provided an entertaining rendition of poor recordings…..What the Atalante 5 does so well is allow you to enjoy the majority of your collection and do an excellent job reproducing the power and scale of the musical performance….the depth and power of the bass is a highlight, yet it is also well-controlled. I would encourage those in the market for top flight entertainment to take a serious look and listen to the Atalante 5
